Proofreading

'My manuscript has been copy edited and corrected.
Should it also be proofread prior to being published?'

Overview

Unsurprisingly, our answer to the above question is, 'Yes, every book needs to be proofread prior to its publication.' The main reason is that converting a manuscript into a book publishing program often produces some formatting errors. Also the text looks very different in book format, pictures and graphics may have moved, and other slight maladjustments are likely to have occurred.

What Our Proofreading Covers

Proofreading is the final process in your book's journey to publication. It's the time to make sure all the i's are dotted and all the t's are crossed.

Proofreading takes place after the manuscript has been formatted into a book. It is conducted using either a PDF of the print-ready book or a printed paperback copy that is labelled 'proof copy.' At Lloyd Moss, our preference is the latter approach. In our experience, there is no better method to spot any discrepancies than reading the words printed on the page aloud.

Our proofreader will scrutinize the printed proof copy and make the necessary corrections and adjustments. Specifically, we check for the following:

  • Typos

  • Line spacing errors

  • Lines/pages with a single word or sentence

  • Formatting discrepancies

  • Missing spaces and sections

  • Inconsistent fonts and/or sizes

  • Incorrect spelling and punctuation

  • Missing and incorrect punctuation marks

  • Inappropriate grammar

  • Incorrect sequencing of chapters and sections

  • Numbers not matching in the text and table of contents

  • Photographs not in correct place

  • Captions with incorrect information

Our Professional Fees

Lynne’s editing of my manuscript and the seven-page report accompanying it were excellent and have given me much to consider - suggestions which will improve my novel.

Lynne is not only highly competent to provide expert editing services, but she does so with a highly professional and supportive manner, which I have greatly appreciated.

It has been a pleasure to work with Lynne and I would highly recommend her in this capacity to other authors.
